Supplemental oxygen is a critical intervention in many emergencies, but only when it is delivered safely. This Canadian Red Cross course certifies responders in oxygen safety, delivery equipment, patient care considerations, and hands-on oxygen administration. It is frequently combined with Basic Life Support and Airway Management to round out a complete responder skill set.
Is this training required?
For general first aid, no. But for many responder and clinical roles it is required or expected. Lifeguards, industrial emergency responders, dental offices, EMS, firefighters, and rescue personnel are commonly required to hold an oxygen administration certification as part of their scope of practice or employer standards. Because oxygen is a compressed gas and a medical intervention, employers and regulators expect anyone who administers it to be formally trained. Certification is valid for three years, after which recertification is required to stay current.
