Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Training

In an atmosphere that cannot sustain life, your air supply is the plan.

Some environments cannot be made safe by ventilation alone. Where the air is immediately dangerous to life and health, workers rely on a self-contained supply, and this course certifies them to inspect, don, use, and maintain SCBA safely, and to respond when something goes wrong.

Is this training required?

Yes, where the work demands it. Under Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), SCBA is required wherever the ambient air is immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH), including fire suppression, confined space rescue, hazmat response, and mine environments. Workers who may use SCBA must be trained to use it safely before they begin that work. Certification is valid for, after which recertification is required.

Who should take it

  • Firefighters and industrial emergency responders
  • Confined space and hazmat teams
  • Mine rescue crews and any workers entering IDLH atmospheres
  • Employers and supervisors responsible for respiratory protection compliance

What you'll learn

By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the legislation governing SCBA use under Ontario OHSA
  • Recognize the physiology of hazardous atmospheres, including hypoxia, CO poisoning, and H2S exposure
  • Identify SCBA components: the air supply, regulator assembly, facepiece assembly, and harness assembly
  • Perform pre-use and post-use inspection
  • Don and doff SCBA correctly
  • Follow emergency procedures for loss of air supply
  • Distinguish open-circuit from closed-circuit (rebreather) SCBA, such as the Dräger BG4 used by Ontario Mine Rescue
  • Maintain and care for the apparatus between uses

Frequently asked questions

Where is SCBA actually required? Wherever the atmosphere is immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH): fire suppression, confined space rescue, hazmat response, and mine environments.

What is the difference between open-circuit and closed-circuit SCBA? Open-circuit units vent exhaled air to the atmosphere, while closed-circuit (rebreather) units recycle it to extend duration. The Dräger BG4 used by Ontario Mine Rescue is a closed-circuit example.

Do you deliver on-site for our crew? Yes, on your site or at [training location]. [Group booking details].
