Atmospheric Monitoring Training

Test the air before your people enter, using calibrated equipment and a trained operator, to O. Reg. 632/05 and CSA Z1006.

A gas detector is only as good as the person reading it. This course certifies your workers to test confined space atmospheres correctly, verify their equipment, interpret the readings, and record results where the law requires them.

Is this training required?

Yes, for confined space work. Ontario's O. Reg. 632/05, Sections 11 to 18, requires atmospheric testing before and during every confined space entry, using properly calibrated equipment operated by a trained person, with the results recorded on the entry permit. This training gives your people the competency the regulation assumes, and it complies with CSA Z1006, the standard for management of work in confined spaces.

Who should take it

  • Workers and supervisors responsible for gas detection and confined space entry
  • Anyone completing atmospheric testing or filling out entry permits
  • Mining, industrial, and utility crews working in potentially hazardous atmospheres
  • Entry attendants and rescue personnel who rely on live atmospheric readings

What you'll learn

By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and test the three categories of atmospheric hazard: oxygen content (acceptable range 19.5% to 23% by volume), flammable or explosive gases (below 25% of the Lower Explosive Limit), and toxic contaminants (within occupational exposure limits)
  • Operate a multi-gas detector that measures O2, LEL, CO, and H2S simultaneously
  • Verify calibration before use and recognize the limitations of the equipment
  • Interpret readings, understand alarm set points, and respond when limits are exceeded
  • Record results correctly on the entry permit as O. Reg. 632/05 requires
  • Understand how ventilation affects atmospheric conditions during an entry

Frequently asked questions

What does the equipment measure? Multi-gas detectors used in confined space work typically read oxygen, flammable gases as a percentage of the Lower Explosive Limit, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulphide at the same time. Training covers all four channels and how to verify calibration before each use.

Does this cover confined space entry itself? This course focuses on the atmospheric testing side, the readings, calibration, and permit records. For the entry procedures around it, see Confined Space Awareness & Entry.

Do you deliver on-site for our crew? Yes, on your site or at [training location]. [Group booking details].
