Working at Heights Training

Ontario-mandatory, CPO-approved fall-protection training, current to the April 2024 standard.

Falls are among the leading causes of serious injury and death on Ontario construction projects. If your workers may use fall protection, the law requires this training before they start, and Siren Safety delivers the current CPO-approved program.

Is this training required?

Yes. Under O. Reg. 297/13 and O. Reg. 213/91 (Section 26), any worker on a construction project who may use a fall-protection system must complete a Working at Heights (WAH) training program approved by Ontario's Chief Prevention Officer (CPO) before they begin that work. Certification is valid for three years, after which a refresher is required.

Who should take it

  • Construction workers who may use fall protection
  • Anyone working above three metres (10 feet): swing stages, boatswains' chairs, scaffolding, roofing rope systems, and mobile elevated work platforms (MEWPs)
  • Employers and supervisors responsible for fall-protection compliance

What you'll learn

By the end of this CPO-approved program, participants will be able to:

  • Identify fall hazards and understand Ontario's fall-protection requirements
  • Select, inspect, fit, and use fall-protection equipment correctly
  • Work safely with ladders, near skylights, and around damaged equipment (added in the April 2024 standard)
  • Understand travel restraint, fall restriction, and fall arrest systems
  • Recognize the need for a written rescue procedure before using a fall-arrest system

Beyond the CPO course: your obligations as an employer

The CPO course is the baseline. Ontario employers must also:

  • Provide site-specific fall-protection training for the actual equipment and hazards on your project
  • Develop written procedures for rescuing a worker after a fall has been arrested, before anyone uses a fall-arrest system, and post them at the project

We can help with both, including suspended-worker rescue planning through our Rescue Planning service.

Frequently asked questions

How long is Working at Heights certification valid? Three years. A CPO-approved refresher is required to keep it current.

Is this the same as fall-protection equipment training? No. The CPO Working at Heights course is the legal baseline; you still need site-specific training on the equipment and hazards of your particular project.

Do you deliver on-site for our crew? Yes, on your site or at [training location]. [Group booking details].
