Safety & Risk Assessments

Know your real risks, not the ones that just look dangerous.

Under Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act, every employer must take every reasonable precaution to protect workers. That starts with an honest assessment of what can actually hurt someone on your site. Siren Safety evaluates your operation, separates genuine hazards from perceived ones, and hands you a practical plan to close the gaps.

Overview

We conduct thorough, site-specific evaluations built for high-risk Northern Ontario environments: mining, construction, utilities, forestry, and film. The result isn't a binder that sits on a shelf; it's a working roadmap to compliance and a safer crew. Every assessment ties directly back to the regulation that applies to your operation, so the recommendations you get are the ones an inspector will expect to see acted on.

What an assessment includes

  • Hazard identification & risk analysis: what can go wrong, how likely, how severe
  • Control verification & validation: confirming the safeguards you have actually work
  • Gap analysis against the applicable regulatory standards
  • An implementation roadmap to bring the site into OHSA compliance

Who it's for

  • Employers standing up a new site, process, or piece of equipment
  • Confined space, work-at-height, or atmospheric-hazard operations
  • Film & TV productions that need a written risk assessment before shooting
  • Any Ontario workplace preparing for an MLITSD inspection or a JHSC review

Regulatory framework

  • OHSA (R.S.O. 1990, c. O.1): the general duty to assess and control hazards
  • O. Reg. 632/05 (Confined Spaces): a written hazard assessment is required before every entry
  • O. Reg. 851 (Industrial Establishments): Pre-Start Health & Safety Reviews (PSRs) under Section 7
  • WSIB Regulation 1101: first-aid requirements for every Ontario workplace
  • Ontario MOL Safety Guidelines for the Film & Television Industry: written risk assessments for productions

How it works

  1. Scope: we learn your site, processes, and the hazards your crew faces.
  2. Assess: on-site hazard identification, control verification, and gap analysis.
  3. Report: a documented assessment with prioritized, practical recommendations.
  4. Roadmap: a clear path to compliance you can action and defend to an inspector.

Why choose Siren

We work in the same high-risk Northern Ontario environments your crew does, so the hazards we flag are the ones that actually show up on your site, not generic checklist items. Every finding is tied to the specific regulation behind it, from O. Reg. 632/05 confined space entries to Section 7 Pre-Start Health and Safety Reviews under O. Reg. 851. And because a hazard identified is only half the job, we can carry the findings straight into a written response. When your assessment surfaces a confined space, height, or atmospheric hazard, our Rescue Planning service turns that finding into a documented, defensible rescue plan.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need a written assessment, or is a walkthrough enough? It depends on the work. For most tasks OHSA's general duty means the reasoning has to be documented and defensible. For confined space work it's not optional: O. Reg. 632/05 requires a written hazard assessment before every entry.

When do I need a Pre-Start Health and Safety Review? A PSR is required under Section 7 of O. Reg. 851 (Industrial Establishments) in defined circumstances, such as new or modified equipment and processes. We flag whether your situation triggers one during scoping and build the assessment around it.

Does this cover film and television productions? Yes. The Ontario Ministry of Labour's Safety Guidelines for the Film and Television Industry call for written risk assessments, and we produce them for productions shooting in the region.
