Hazardous Materials Response Training

HazMat response training for a region built on smelting, acids, and chemical handling, at Awareness, Operations, and Technician levels to NFPA 470.

Sudbury's nickel smelting, acid plant operations, and chemical handling make hazardous materials response a core competency, not a nice-to-have. Siren Safety trains HazMat response to the current NFPA 470 standard, at the level your team's role requires.

Is this training required?

Under Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act (TDGA), employers must ensure adequate emergency response procedures for chemical hazards. NFPA 470, the consolidated HazMat emergency response standard that supersedes NFPA 472, defines the competencies for each response level. The level your workers need depends on their role, from recognizing a release and calling it in, through defensive containment, to offensive intervention.

Training levels

  • Awareness: recognize hazardous materials, initiate the emergency response, take protective actions, and handle notification only. This is the entry level for anyone who may discover a release.
  • Operations: defensive actions, PPE selection, hazard identification using the Emergency Response Guidebook, and evidence preservation. Operations-level responders act to contain a release from a safe distance without direct contact with the product.
  • Technician: offensive actions, product identification, confinement and containment, and decontamination. Technicians make direct contact with the product to stop a release at its source. IFSAC and Pro Board accreditation is available at the technician level.

Who should take it

  • Mining and industrial emergency response teams
  • Municipal and volunteer fire departments
  • Workers who handle, store, or transport dangerous goods
  • Employers responsible for chemical-hazard emergency response procedures
  • Supervisors coordinating on-site response at smelting, acid plant, or chemical-handling operations

What you'll learn

By the end of the program, participants at the appropriate level will be able to:

  • Recognize hazardous materials and initiate the emergency response
  • Take protective actions and carry out required notifications
  • Select and use appropriate PPE for the hazard
  • Identify hazards using the Emergency Response Guidebook and preserve evidence
  • Perform defensive confinement and offensive containment as their level allows
  • Identify products and carry out decontamination procedures (technician level)
