The Petzl BAR is a removable positioning bar that fits onto the Petzl ATTACHE screw-lock carabiner to hold it in the correct orientation and keep it from cross-loading.
Rope access technicians and climbers who belay or rope up on a glacier with the ATTACHE use the BAR to lock the carabiner into a single, predictable orientation, so it always loads along its strong major axis instead of shifting during use. Once BAR is closed over the carabiner's locking sleeve, the gate cannot be accidentally unlocked, and BAR itself cannot be closed unless the ATTACHE's gate is already fully locked, which limits a common source of user error at the belay.
