Is this training required?

Under Transport Canada Publication TP 13008, Marine Advanced First Aid is the required standard for crew serving on vessels engaged in unlimited voyages or near-coastal Class 1 voyages. These are the longer, farther-from-shore operations where a vessel may be well beyond quick access to shore-based medical care, so the crew's own first-aid capability has to be higher than the basic standard. How is this different from Marine Basic First Aid? Marine Advanced First Aid is the higher tier, required for unlimited and near-coastal Class 1 voyages, and it goes further into marine first-aid equipment and patient transfer from a vessel. If your vessel operates closer to shore, Marine Basic First Aid may be the right level instead.

What certification do I receive? Two: a three-year Canadian Red Cross certification and a Transport Canada certification under TP 13008.

Is this the same as Marine Medical Care? No. Marine Medical Care is a separate, 50-hour designation for the higher-level medical role carried on vessels that must have a designated medical care provider aboard.
