First Responder is a Canadian Red Cross certification, also offered by St. John Ambulance, built for individuals in or training for frontline emergency response roles. Over 40 hours it develops the trauma-care, medical-emergency, and CPR skills needed to manage real incidents, and forms the prerequisite pathway toward Emergency Medical Responder (EMR).

Is this training required?

Not by a single blanket regulation, but it is the recognized standard for people designated as frontline responders. Firefighters and industrial emergency response teams are commonly required to hold this level of certification by their employer, department, or workplace emergency plan. If your role or your site's emergency response plan names you as a first responder, this is the program that meets that expectation. Certification is valid for three years, after which recertification is required.
