CPR / AED

Standalone CPR and defibrillator certification, at the level you need.

Cardiac arrest is survivable when someone nearby knows CPR and can use an AED. Roughly 60,000 cardiac arrests happen outside hospitals in Canada every year, and early CPR and AED use significantly improves survival. This course certifies you in CPR and AED use across adult, child, and infant protocols, at the level your role or workplace calls for.

Is this training required?

Sometimes. CPR and AED skills are often built into workplace first aid, so many people meet the requirement through a full first aid course rather than a standalone class. On their own, CPR and AED certification can also be a specific requirement for some roles, including certain healthcare, care, and safety-sensitive positions. If you are not sure which applies to you, tell us the role and we will point you to the right level.

CPR levels available

CPR-A: adult
CPR-B: adult, child, and infant
CPR-C: adult, child, and infant, plus two-rescuer
CPR-HCP / BLS: all ages plus bag-valve-mask, for healthcare providers

The Lifesaving Society offers CPR-A, CPR-B, CPR-C, and CPR-HCP. Heart & Stroke offers Heartsaver CPR/AED for the public and BLS for healthcare providers.

What you'll learn

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Recognize cardiac arrest and activate emergency response quickly
Perform effective CPR on adults, and on children and infants where the level covers them
Use an automated external defibrillator (AED) safely and correctly
Work as part of a two-rescuer team, at CPR-C and above
Manage a choking casualty across the age groups covered by the level

Frequently asked questions

How long is CPR/AED certification valid? Three years for most levels. HCP and BLS certification is valid for one year and must be renewed annually.

Which CPR level do I need? It depends on your role. CPR-A covers adults only; CPR-B and CPR-C add child and infant protocols, with CPR-C also covering two-rescuer technique; HCP and BLS are for healthcare providers and add bag-valve-mask.
