quickstep
Quickstep

The Petzl QUICKSTEP is an adjustable single-step etrier used for aid climbing, giving a climber one quick foot step to bridge a section of rock that cannot be free climbed.

Climbers and rope access technicians use the QUICKSTEP where a single, fast-adjusting step is more practical than a multi-step ladder: the DoubleBack buckle lets the length be changed in seconds while the climber is weighting it, a loop at the free end of the webbing lets a piton be attached during placement, and a foot-retention system helps keep the foot seated in the step. A Petzl STRING holds a carabiner in position at the top attachment point and protects it from wear.

Key features

Single adjustable step for aid climbing, sized in seconds via the DoubleBack buckle

Foot retention system helps keep the foot seated in the step while ascending

Loop on the free end of the webbing for attaching a piton during placement

3 mm hole in the buckle for attaching a cord to help with adjustment

Petzl STRING holds the carabiner in position and protects the attachment loop from wear

Specifications

Weight: 142 g

Material(s): nylon webbing, DoubleBack buckle of aluminum and heat-treated steel

Works with

The Petzl ASCENSION handled ascender: Petzl's Canadian listing for the GRADISTEP, the QUICKSTEP's multi-step sibling etrier built with the same STRING-and-carabiner attachment point, states this style of etrier "attaches to an ASCENSION handled ascender for rope ascents"; the QUICKSTEP clips on the same way

A rope-access or aid-climbing anchor point, clipped directly with a carabiner through the QUICKSTEP's attachment loop when no ascender is in use

Common questions

Is the Petzl QUICKSTEP a rope clamp?

No, the Petzl QUICKSTEP is a single-step etrier (an adjustable webbing step), not a mechanical rope clamp; a climber attaches it to a carabiner on a rope clamp, a piton, or an anchor, rather than clipping it directly to the rope.

How is the QUICKSTEP different from the GRADISTEP?

The Petzl QUICKSTEP is a single adjustable step for one quick placement, while the Petzl GRADISTEP is a fixed five-step etrier for longer aided sections; a climber often carries the QUICKSTEP alongside a GRADISTEP for different types of aid moves.

Does the QUICKSTEP come with a carabiner?

No, the Petzl QUICKSTEP ships with a Petzl STRING to hold a carabiner the user supplies separately, rather than including a carabiner.
